Russian text,  red decorative boards with illustrated endpapers and previous owner signature on pastedown. Pages are age toned and binding is VG but interior hinges are just visible.  Many of the stories by Melnikov,  targeted social and domestic despotism, all-pervading corruption and serfdom. They were praised by Russian radical critics of the time.
